Skeine

The goal of this major studio project was to create a new product and service, focusing on designing a monthly yarn & pattern subscription box for yarn crafters to sign up and use. The challenge was to self-direct and use all my learned graphic design and professional skills.

The strategy that I used was to document my interests and note what can be useful, choosing a yarn craft packaging box and an inner mini-booklet.

A takeaway of this project was understanding the 3D design of the packaging, especially with connecting the yarn doodles across each surface of the packaging. Another takeaway was experimenting and connecting the typeface’s personality with Skeine’s doodles and brand direction.

Sketches

  • Spring based
  • Played around with the style of the doodles
  • Yarn and flower doodles to be prominent

Creative Creation

  • Used New Kansas Bold for headings and Niramit for body copy
  • Lime Green represents being creative and conncected to nature
  • Bubblegum Pink represents caring and playfulness

Featured Pillow

  • I crocheted this pillow by hand
  • Took around 2 days to complete
  • Important for creating the pattern and implementing professional images

Rough Package Mockup

  • Grid paper to help with the shape and designs
  • Drew on the box to help visualize design continuity across each surface

Mailer Package

  • Full vibrant coloured background to stand out
  • Yarn flow and movement to show playfulness
  • The pink band around the box was implemented with a "Tear Here" security feature
  • Added a light water-colour texture behind the logo for affed effect
  • Perforated circles to pull the yarn through, helps with preventing snags when pulling

Mini-Booklet

  • Took inspiration from existing pattern books and online sources
  • Wanted to stray away from being too cliché and tacky
